When you are in the early stages of running a business, there are a thousand and one things you need to do. From taking on employees to balancing the books, getting the basics right is vital if you want to avoid falling at the first hurdle.
However, it can be easy to lose sight of the bigger picture when you get caught up in the day-to-day tasks which can often be a bit mundane. Very soon, you lose that initial enthusiasm and passion which helped you to get things off the ground in the first place.
So how can you ensure you keep that bigger vision in mind while still dealing with the fundamentals of running a business? Here are my three top tips:
Review – Once a month, set aside a few hours to look back over what has been achieved so far, and what your next steps will be. Have a clear business plan from the outset and ensure that whatever you are doing is driving you towards your goals. If not, make changes now before you get into bad habits.
Vision board – I am a firm believer in the power of images, and nothing is more motivating than seeing your dreams in front of you every day! A vision board is a representation of what you want to have, do or be – whether that’s in your business or in your personal life – and it can include pictures as well as powerful words and phrases. Create one for your office and look at it when you are struggling: it will remind you of what you want to achieve and will kick-start your motivation.
Mentoring – We all need a bit of support from time to time. If you have a contact or a friend who has successfully set up and run a business, why not ask them to meet you on a regular basis to look at your progress and offer advice based on their experience?
